Village Elementary celebrates "Day of
Caring" with Pennies for Peace donation to help build
schools on Afghan istan-Pakistan
border
The Village Elementary School's “Day of
Caring,” May 13, 2010, was a schoolwide event which focused on
the good work and community service the school has been
doing this year. Among the daylong presentations was a
special tribute to education.
Teacher Margret Mason, left, talked
about the effect of reading “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg
Mortensen and his desire to build schools on the
Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Children in grade three
collected 43,356 pennies [$433.56] and donated them Greg
Mortensen’s foundation.
As part of the assembly third graders
reenacted Mortensen's difficulties when trekking through the
mountains and working to build schools in such a remote
region. The skit was written and produced by Library/Media
Specialist Deb Lynch and teacher Lucy Hall. They sang
a song “Three Cups of Tea,” and waved streamers to show
support.
Third
grade teacher Shari Haight said, “The entire Village
Elementary School is a caring place and will celebrated
their good works. The third graders have been collecting
pennies to send to an international agency which helps build
schools, Pennies for Peace. The project has provided
wonderful lessons on empathy and philanthropy for our
students."
Parent volunteer Rachel Forberg and Northwest Savings Bank
helped count pennies.
"As we continue our collection of
pennies to help build schools for the children of
Afghanistan and Pakistan, we felt it was important to
re-visit our purpose and renew our dedication to this
worthwhile cause," she added. "Pennies for Peace is an
organization devoted to help students broaden their cultural
horizons and learn about their capacity as philanthropists.
It educates children about the world beyond their experience
and shows them that they can make a positive impact on a
global scale, one penny at a time. Students learn that by
shari ng their virtually worthless pennies, they can bring
hope and educational opportunities to these impoverished
children. We are proud of the giving of our children, even
in these tough economic times!"
