French students experience an in-school
Mardi Gras Carnival
Students and teachers from Hilton High
School, Merton Williams Middle School, and the Village
Elementary School joined forces this month to celebrate
Mardi Gras with a flare said French Teacher Diane Campbell
of Merton Williams Middle School.
"Students in fifth and sixth grade
classes at the Village Elementary worked with art teachers
to create and decorate masks for the celebration," Mrs.
Campbell said. "In total 120 students came to the Middle
School auditorium and had the opportunity to participate in
Carnival New Orleans style. They played games like 'Color
Stomp,' 'Culture Trivia,' and 'The Cognate Challenge.' They
even got to participate in the 'Galette de Roi' ceremony
where each class discovered who was their kings. All the
students left with tattoos, crowns, dubloons [Mardi Gras
coins], gum coins, and beads as well as a taste of some new
French words.
