Who was Merton Williams?
Hilton Central School District's Merton
Williams Middle School was named after Parma farmer
Merton Williams, right, who served on the Hilton
CSD Board of Education from 1953 to 1963.
The two-story, white brick school
building itself was opened in 1965 and was originally called
"Merton Williams Junior High School." Cost was $1.8
million and first principal was Joseph Lester. Later,
additions were added including a $4.5 million Aquatic
Facility.
Known to his family as "Uncle
Mert," Mr. Williams was a beloved individual in the Hilton
area according to reports. He was related to former
one-room schoolhouse teacher Ruth McClelland whose school on
Peck Rd. was centralized into the Spencerport CSD.
