First Hugh Craigie Teaching Award Presented 

Hilton High School Chemistry Teacher Alpa Khandhar was the recipient of the first Hugh Craigie Teaching Award, a $1,000 tax-free stipend presented to the Hilton High School teacher who “has a passion and unselfish dedication to teaching that has inspired students to realize their full potential.”  Ms. Khandhar received the award this month. 

“Alpa embodies the essence of this award,” said former Hilton High School Principal David Dimbleby. “She is a brilliant chemist who could have sought a lucrative career in the private sector, but she chose to go into teaching and has produced outstanding results for both Regents and Advanced Placement Chemistry students.”  She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The award was established this year by Hilton High School Hall of Fame member James Craigie ’71 to honor his father, Hugh Craigie, resident of Lowden Pt. Rd., Greece, who was a technology teacher for over 30 years in the Franklinville, NY school system and the Greece Central School District.  He has been retired for 15 years. 

James Craigie, one of seven children all of who graduated from Hilton High School, was CEO of Spalding Sports Worldwide at the time and now is CEO Church & Dwight of Princeton, NJ .  Mr. Craigie was inducted into the Hilton High School Alumni Hall of Fame in 2001.  "I created this award to honor the millions of teachers in our country who have dedicated their lives to educating and inspiring young people,” James Craigie said.  “My father was one of these unsung heroes who touched the lives of thousands of students over his teaching career and inspired them to believe in their ability to lead happy and productive lives."
