Hilton Central School District
Attendance Policy
Attendance
Policy - According to New York
State Law, children must attend school between the
ages of six and 16 years old. Absence from school
for the following reasons are considered excusable:
illness, death or illness in the family, medical
appointments, impassable road, religious
observances, quarantine, approved college visit,
take-your-child-to-work-day, military obligations,
required presence in court, remedial health
treatment, approved cooperative work programs or
other reason approved by the Board of Education.
Absences, tardiness or early departure are
considered unexcused if they do not fall in one of
the above categories including family vacation,
hunting, babysitting, hair cut, obtaining learner's
permit, road test, oversleeping. Please inform the
school by 9 am that morning if your child will be
absent, and send a written excuse with your child
when he or she returns to school stating the date
and reason for the absence. After three days without
an excuse, the student is declared illegally absent.
If a student needs to be excused from school early,
please write an excuse. In grades K-6, the student
should present the excuse to the classroom teacher,
and in grades 7-8, to the school nurse.
HCSD Attendance Policy 7110
School attendance is both a right and a responsibility. The
School District is an active partner with students and
parents in the task of ensuring that all students meet or
exceed the New York State Learning Standards. Because the
School District recognizes that consistent school
attendance, academic success and school completion have a
positive correlation, the School District will develop,
review and, if necessary, revise a Comprehensive Student
Attendance Policy.
Attendance Offices:
A Written Note is
required for all absences when the student returns. A legal
absence is defined as: sick, doctor/dentist appointment,
court, funeral, college visit.
Early Dismissal at High School
- Hilton High School is permitting ONLY seniors
[12th grade] to have a reduced schedule. If a student
wishes to leave the building before 2:15 p.m. for ANY reason
[work experience, co-op, etc.], the student must fill out an
application for an "Early Dismissal Pass." Applications
[require parent approval, school counselor approval] are
available in the Counseling Office. It is the intention
that all the applications will be processed by the second
week of school, so that the early dismissal status is
indicated on the student's class schedule as well as the
early dismissal card which must be presented to security to
leave the building early. For further information:
585-392-1000 ext. 2243.
Tardies: All students
arriving after 7:25 am need to sign in. Students arriving
after 7:25 am are tardy [late] to school. Students are not
penalized for excused tardies if they have a note signed by
a parent [sick, appointment]. Unexcused tardies result in
detention. Please notify the Attendance Office of extended
absences such as vacations, surgery, etc. An unverified
absence is illegal. For further information about High
School Attendance: 585-392-1000 ext. 2246.
