offers both a diploma and individual course certifications

The International Baccalaureate Program
is a rigorous, pre-university course of study. It is a
comprehensive, balanced curriculum that incorporates high
standards of assessment. With a focus on international
understanding, the IB Program meets the needs of
highly-motivated students during their junior and senior
years. Students may earn either an IB diploma or individual
IB course certificates.

Hilton High School received approval
for acceptance into the IB Diploma Programme in
2002 from the IB Organizatio n,
headquartered in Switzerland. The diploma programme is
a two-year curriculum. IB is integrated with current
and expanded Advanced Placement courses. Additional work is
required in Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Action and
Services, and a required 4,000-word Extended Essay.
IB Mission Statement:
Through comprehensive and balanced curricula coupled with
challenging assessments, the International Baccalaureate
Organization aims to assist schools in their endeavours to
develop the individual talents of young people and teach
them to relate the experience of the classroom to the
realities of the world outside. Beyond intellectual rigour
and high academic standards, strong emphasis is placed on
the ideals of international understanding and responsible
citizenship, to the end that IB students may become critical
and compassionate
thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in
local and world affairs, conscious of the shared humanity
that binds all people together while respecting the variety
of cultures and attitudes that makes for the richness of
life.
IB Diploma Requirements:
Students study six areas concurrently: Language A1
[English]; Second Language [French or Spanish]; Individuals
and Societies [IB History of the Americas]; Experimental
Science [IB Biology]; Mathematics [IB Math, IB Math
Studies]; Arts and Electives [IB Music, IB Visual Arts, IB
Psychology, IB Information Technology in a Global Society],
IB Computer Science; additional requirements - Theory of
Knowledge [two-semester course which stimulates critical
reflection on knowledge gained inside and outside the
classroom], Extended Essay [a 4,000-word research essay
under the guidance of a mentor], Creativity, Action, Service
[50 hrs. in each area outside the school day].
IB Certificates:
Students may elect to take one or more IB courses in order
to earn an IB certificate. Enrollment in an IB course
allows the student to register for Theory of Knowledge as
well.
